Roma and Sinti Holocaust Remembrance Day on August 2

On August 2, Roma and Sinti commemorate the liquidation of the Gypsy camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau by the Nazis in 1944. Roma and Sinti were deported via the Westerbork concentration camp to concentration camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau. On August 2, it is commemorated that the last 4,300 Sinti and Roma in the German Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau were murdered by the SS on the night of August 2 of 1944, despite their fierce resistance.

In memory of all 500,000 Sinti and Roma who were murdered in Nazi-occupied Europe, the European Parliament declared this date European Holocaust Remembrance Day for Sinti and Roma in 2015.
